Tension in Benue/Taraba border community as armed attack leaves seven dead

Fresh tension has erupted in Mberev Council Ward, located between Taraba and Benue States, following a renewed attack allegedly linked to armed herdsmen reportedly suspected by men in military uniform resulting in the death of seven local youths.

Mberev, a settlement within the Shitile community, has in recent years witnessed repeated attempts by suspected herders to forcefully gain access to the area.

Community sources claim that more than four previous attempts were repelled by local youths led by a vigilante group loyal to a man identified as "Bajor."

However, residents reported that few days ago a group of armed herders allegedly returned to the community in the company of gangs dressed in military camouflage triggering violent confrontations that left seven youths dead.

Community members lamented that the attacks had continued to put farmlands and crops at risk, with agricultural produce allegedly destroyed on a daily basis by grazing livestock.

The situation has reportedly caused fear among residents some.of who are fleeing their ancestral homes.

In response, community leaders are urgently appealing for government intervention. They have called on the Senator representing Benue North-East (Zone A), Barr. Emmanuel Udende; the Chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area; and the Member representing Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency to wade into the matter and ensure the withdrawal of the men in military uniform allegedly aiding the aggressors.

According to the residents, failure to act could lead to the displacement of more families and the loss of ancestral land.

“This is injustice against an innocent people, and we can no longer remain silent,” a community representative said.

Authorities at the local level are yet to issue an official response as appeal for peace and protection continues to mount in Mberev.
