Benue Speaker seeks tougher security measures after attack on lawmaker’s convoy

The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Alfred Emberga, has urged security agencies to intensify efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Michael Upaa, the Speaker made the call during a solidarity visit to the Minority Whip of the Assembly, Mr. Samuel Jiji, whose convoy was attacked last week by suspected bandits.

The incident reportedly occurred near Tsukwa Village, Anyiin, in Logo Local Government Area, as Mr. Jiji and his entourage were returning to Makurdi after a peace meeting in Ayilamo town.

The attack claimed the life of a former councillor of Logo Local Government, Mr. Tsebee Atindinga, who was shot dead at the scene.

Expressing concern over the development, the Speaker stressed the need for greater collaboration between security agencies and local communities to curb rising criminal activities. He reaffirmed that the safety of citizens and public officials remains a top priority of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

“We urge our security operatives to remain proactive and vigilant in ensuring that peace and security are sustained across all communities in Benue. The unfortunate incident involving Hon. Jiji’s convoy is a reminder of the need for continuous efforts to safeguard our people. We remain confident in the capacity of our security agencies to rise to the occasion and protect lives and property,” he stated.

Responding, Mr. Jiji appreciated the Speaker and members of the House for their visit and show of solidarity.

The Speaker was accompanied by principal officers and members of the Assembly, including the Majority Chief Whip, Ikong Ijebe, the Deputy Majority Whip, Simon Gabo, and Douglas Akya, representing Makurdi North State Constituency.
