The United States President Donald Trump has threatened potential military intervention in Nigeria, alleging widespread killings of Christians in the country.

President Trump issued the warning in posts shared on his Truth Social platform between Friday and Saturday, declaring that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in Africa’s most populous nation.

The American leader also labelling Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” a designation typically reserved by the U.S. Department of State for nations deemed to be engaged in severe violations of religious freedom. He urged American lawmakers to investigate what he described as “mass slaughter” and warned that the U.S. could halt aid to Nigeria.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump said.

He further claimed he had directed the U.S. military to prepare plans for a possible strike, warning that any attack would be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”

Trump concluded with a stark message: “WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”

Tinubu Responds

Responding to the remarks, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dismissed the characterisation of Nigeria as hostile to religious freedom, insisting the country remains committed to safeguarding the rights of all citizens regardless of faith.

“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,” Tinubu stated.

The Nigerian government has not yet issued any further response to Trump’s threat of military action.
