NDLEA, Truck Operators Join Forces to Curb Drug-Related Road Accidents in Edo

Benin City – In a proactive move to address the rising incidence of drug-induced accidents involving heavy-duty trucks, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has partnered with the Heavy Duty Truck Owners, Marketers and Suppliers Association (HATOMSA), Edo State Chapter.

The collaboration followed a courtesy visit to the NDLEA office in Benin City over the weekend, led by HATOMSA Chairman, Comrade Sarahaisu Musa. The meeting focused on promoting road safety and reducing drug abuse among truck operators in the state.

NDLEA Edo State Commander, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, expressed concern over the increasing trend of drug-related incidents involving heavy-duty vehicles. “We have observed a worrying rise in road accidents attributed to drug use among truck drivers. These incidents endanger not only the lives of drivers but also those of other road users,” he said. Dr. Ofoyeju emphasised the need for awareness campaigns, seminars, and training programmes to educate truck operators on the dangers of drug abuse.

Comrade Sarahaisu Musa welcomed the initiative and pledged HATOMSA’s commitment to working with the NDLEA to educate members on safe driving practices. “We must work together to create safer roads. HATOMSA is dedicated to ensuring our members understand the consequences of drug use and the importance of responsible driving,” Musa stated.

Both organisations agreed to launch a series of initiatives in the coming months, including joint workshops, outreach programmes, regular monitoring of drivers, and potential random drug testing to enhance safety and accountability within the industry.

The partnership between NDLEA and HATOMSA is expected to significantly reduce drug-related accidents, ensuring safer roads and communities across Edo State.
