UNIJOS Graduate Regains Freedom After Jos–Kaduna Highway Kidnapping Sparks Nationwide Outcry

Relief swept across family members, friends, and concerned Nigerians on Wednesday following reports that John Arum, a University of Jos (UNIJOS) graduate abducted along the notorious Jos–Kaduna highway, has been released after several days in captivity.

News of his freedom first emerged on social media, with Facebook user Musa Umaru reporting that Arum was sighted travelling from Funtua to Zaria, triggering cautious celebration among those who had closely followed the case.

Arum’s abduction had earlier provoked widespread outrage across the country after disturbing accounts of his ordeal in captivity surfaced online.

His abductors were alleged to have subjected him to severe physical abuse while repeatedly demanding ransom for his release, further fuelling public anger over worsening insecurity on major highways.

At the height of the incident, reports suggested that the kidnappers demanded a ransom running into tens of millions of naira, with some claims putting the figure at about ₦30 million, highlighting the increasingly commercial nature of kidnapping in the country.

As of press time, it remained unclear whether any ransom was eventually paid to secure his freedom, a detail often left undisclosed in similar cases.

Highway of Fear

The Jos–Kaduna and Abuja–Kaduna highways have, in recent years, become notorious flashpoints for kidnappings and armed attacks, with commuters frequently targeted by criminal gangs operating with growing boldness.

Despite repeated assurances and ongoing security operations by relevant agencies, sporadic attacks have persisted, deepening public concern about the safety of travellers on Nigeria’s highways.

His story triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing outrage, offering prayers, and demanding stronger government action to curb rising insecurity.

While celebrations continue over his release, several questions remain unanswered, including the exact circumstances of his freedom and broader concerns about security along major travel routes.

Security analysts have continued to stress the need for intelligence-driven operations and sustained protection of highways to prevent similar incidents.

For now, however, attention remains fixed on his safe return—marking yet another dramatic rescue in a growing list of kidnapping cases that have unsettled the nation.
