Toronto Police arrest 28-year-old suspect over killing of university student

The Toronto Police Service has arrested a 28-year-old man, Babatunde Afuwape, in connection with the killing of a university student in the city late last year.

In a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, police confirmed that Afuwape, a Toronto resident, has been charged with the murder of 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi. The incident occurred on December 23, 2025.

“Babatunde Afuwape, 28, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with the murder of university student Shivank Avasthi, 20,” the police said.

Investigators disclosed that they are seeking additional information from the public, noting that the suspect may have had contact with other individuals on the day of the incident.

Police urged anyone with relevant information to assist the investigation, stressing that even seemingly minor details could be important.

Members of the public were encouraged to contact the police directly or provide tips anonymously.

Authorities said further details surrounding the circumstances of Avasthi’s death have not yet been released, as investigations are ongoing.
