Rivers Assembly serves impeachment notice on Gov. Fubara, Deputy

Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu have reportedly been served impeachment notice by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Two separate notices circulating on social media were said to have been signed by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Martin Amaewhule, and addressed individually to the governor and his deputy.

The development followed the House’s decision on Thursday to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct.

The lawmakers accused Governor Fubara of spending state funds without an approved appropriation bill.

In the notice titled “Re: Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct Brought Pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Amended), Forwarding of Copy of Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct,”

Amaewhule cited alleged misconduct by the executive arm of government.
According to the Speaker, the notice of allegations was brought by 26 members of the House, representing more than two-thirds of the Assembly’s membership, in line with constitutional requirements.

“I received a copy of the Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct dated 5th January 2026 and brought against you by twenty-six (26) members of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the notice read.

Amaewhule said the notice was forwarded to Governor Fubara pursuant to Sections 188 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), adding that the governor was required to respond formally to the allegations.

“You are requested to reply to the allegations made against you in the said Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct accordingly. In doing this, your attention is drawn to the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the notice stated.

A similar notice was also reportedly served on the deputy governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, as the impeachment process gathers momentum in the state.
