IGP orders nationwide arms audit to strengthen Police accountability

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed all Commissioners of Police across Nigeria to immediately begin a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition within their respective commands.

The directive was contained in a statement signed and issued in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid.

According to the statement, the announcement was made during an emergency conference held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre in Abuja.

The meeting was convened to address urgent operational and administrative issues affecting the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking at the conference, the Inspector-General said the audit exercise is aimed at strengthening accountability across all police formations.

He explained that it would also help identify operational gaps within the system.

Disu added that the process is expected to prevent misuse of police assets nationwide.
He further noted that it will enhance the overall operational readiness of the Force.

The IGP stressed that the initiative goes beyond routine administrative checks.
According to him, it represents a critical institutional measure designed to ensure proper documentation and security of arms and ammunition.

He stated that all items must be accounted for and deployed strictly in line with established operational standards.

Disu directed Commissioners of Police to ensure the audit is conducted thoroughly, transparently, and with proper documentation.

He also ordered that detailed reports from the exercise be submitted to Force Headquarters within the stipulated timeframe.

The Inspector-General reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to ongoing reforms focused on accountability, professionalism, and stronger internal control systems.

He assured Nigerians that the reform efforts are intended to build a more disciplined and responsive police institution capable of addressing evolving security challenges.
