Ogun police launch probe after viral video shows Portable allegedly beaten in custody

The Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing controversial Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody.

The footage, which has been trending on social media platforms like X, shows the handcuffed musician reportedly being beaten by some police personnel at a detention facility in Ogun State, sparking public outrage and raising fresh concerns over police conduct and human rights.

Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that Portable is currently in custody but stressed that the alleged assault is unacceptable and not in line with police standards.

“He was arrested and he is with us, but the focus here is the assault that occurred at the station. We don’t condone it,” DSP Babaseyi said.

The police spokesperson also emphasized that filming or publicly displaying suspects is prohibited, citing safety risks for both suspects and the integrity of investigations.

“No matter who the suspect is, nobody should be treated in such a manner,” he added.

According to DSP Babaseyi, an internal investigation has already begun, and any officers found culpable will face legal consequences.

“The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be sent to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started,” he confirmed.
