Fresh killings in Benue: Two farmers slain as fear spreads across Kwande communities

Residents of Turan district in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State have been thrown into mourning following a fresh attack by suspected militia herdsmen that left two farmers dead and several others displaced.
The attack reportedly occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in Imande Avur and surrounding communities of Abande, Mbaikyor and Turan, where armed men stormed farmlands and homes, sowing fear and chaos among residents.
Among those killed were Elder Abur Alam and his son, Ikyaa Bashi, described by community members as peaceful farmers who were attacked while trying to earn a living.
A former councillor in Kwande LGA, Mr. Akerigba Lawrence, confirmed the incident and lamented what he described as the persistent and unchecked nature of the attacks on the area.
“Again, there was a brutal attack on our community by Fulani insurgents yesterday. Elder Abur Alam and his son were killed, and many people have been forced to flee their homes,” Lawrence said.
He noted that for the past two weeks, communities in Turan have come under daily attacks, leading to loss of lives, destruction of livelihoods and growing humanitarian concerns.
“Our people are being attacked and killed every day. The government has forgotten about us. These attacks have become frequent, devastating and completely unchecked,” he added.
Lawrence also raised concerns over alleged complicity and the absence of timely security intervention, saying affected families have received no meaningful support from authorities.
According to him, efforts to alert security agencies yielded little result, as the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Udeme Edet, reportedly said she was not yet aware of the incident when contacted.
Describing the situation as dire and urged the government to act swiftly, saying, “The people of Turan can no longer endure this bloodshed. Immediate action is required to stop these attacks, protect lives and ensure justice.”
