Benue killings: Alia orders immediate offensive against suspected herdsmen forest hideouts

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has directed security agencies to commence immediate, coordinated operations to dismantle suspected armed herder camps in forests across several parts of the state following a fresh wave of deadly attacks.

The affected areas include Apa, Otukpo, Gwer-West Local Government Areas and other locations where the attackers are believed to have established bases.

The governor’s directive was conveyed in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, in reaction to recent attacks on Edikwu-Ankpali, Ikobi and Adija communities in Apa LGA, as well as Upu village in Otukpo LGA, where many lives were reportedly lost.

Governor Alia condemned the killings, describing them as senseless and intolerable, warning that the state would no longer tolerate such acts of violence.

“These attacks on innocent communities are not only brutal but unacceptable. They have assumed a disturbing, hydra-headed dimension that must be decisively confronted,” he said.

He stressed that intelligence reports indicate that the assailants operate from forest enclaves, which must now be targeted in a sustained security operation.

“The criminals have taken advantage of forested areas as safe havens to plan and execute attacks. We have directed that such camps be identified and completely dislodged without delay,” the governor stated.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting residents, Alia said the operation would be intelligence-driven and sustained until normalcy is fully restored.

“Our administration remains resolute in its duty to protect lives and property. We are initiating a sustained crackdown to neutralise these threats and restore confidence among our people,” he added.

He further assured that the state government is working in close collaboration with federal security agencies to ensure effective results and long-term peace.

The governor also appealed to residents of affected communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.

“We call on citizens to stay alert and support security efforts with credible information that will help in tracking these criminal elements,” he urged.

Governor Alia extended his condolences to families affected by the attacks, assuring that his administration would continue to take firm actions to end insecurity and make Benue safe for all residents.
