Benue Gov redeems ₦500,000 empowerment pledge, boosts women’s political and economic inclusion

The Benue State Government on Friday fulfilled Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s ₦500,000 empowerment pledge to 23 beneficiaries of the APC’s women-focused 774 Explode Initiative, signaling a major step toward expanding gender inclusion and participation in politics.

The pledge redemption ceremony took place at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Hon. Scholastica Ben Sor, representing the governor.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Ben Sor recalled that the initiative was introduced to Benue in June 2024 by the APC National Woman Leader, Dr. Mary Adele Alile, under the theme “Enhancing Gender Space in Politics.” She highlighted Benue as the first state in Nigeria to flag off the programme, attributing this milestone to Governor Alia’s commitment to the advancement of women and the girl child.

“Governor Alia pledged to support one beneficiary from each of the 23 local government areas with ₦500,000 and additional funding for vocational skills training,” she said. “This is a leader who says what he means and does what he says.

Today, we are here to redeem that pledge so people can see that His Excellency is a man of his word.”

Hon. Ben Sor clarified that the funds came directly from the governor’s office, not the national party, underscoring the administration’s dedication to empowering women both economically and politically.

Beneficiaries received two envelopes-one with the cash grant and the other for skills acquisition in trades such as manicure and pedicure, baking, hairdressing, tailoring, and ICT, designed to foster self-reliance beyond political appointments.

Highlighting the broader impact of the initiative, Hon. Ben Sor noted, “Women often bear silent burdens in society. The 774 Explode Initiative amplifies their voices and positions them strategically in governance and decision-making. Governor Alia’s administration has appointed over 70 women to meaningful positions, not ceremonial roles.”

Representatives of beneficiaries from the three senatorial zones expressed gratitude. Hon. Uwah Vera Wuese from Ukum Local Government thanked God and Governor Alia for recognizing women as partners in development.

Esther Kunde from Makurdi pledged continued support and grassroots mobilization for the administration, while Ode Ada Theresa from Otukpo commended both the Federal Government and the Benue State Government for prioritizing women empowerment.

The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including the Benue State APC Woman Leader Mrs. Helen Agaigbe, Deputy Chairman of Vandeikya Local Government Hon. Mrs. Janet Orukuna, and other notable stakeholders.

The event highlighted the Benue State Government’s commitment to accountability, women empowerment, and inclusive governance, with the successful fulfilment of the pledge serving as a strong signal of trust, leadership, and sustainable development.
