Why I married SGF Akume - Queen Zaynab, opens up

Queen Zaynab Ngohemba Akume, formerly known as Queen Zaynab Otiti Obanor, has broken her silence on her recent marriage to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, describing the union as one founded on maturity, shared purpose and mutual understanding.

Reports had it that the couple quietly tied the knot in 2024 in a private ceremony, a development that has since sparked widespread public interest and conversations within Nigeria’s social and political circles.

In a statement issued by her media aide, David Adeoye, Zaynab said the marriage symbolises the coming together of two individuals already dedicated to public service, rather than a personal reinvention for either party.

According to the statement, the relationship is “a partnership shaped by maturity, shared purpose, and an understanding that personal stability strengthens public duty.”

It further explained that the union represents a reinforcement of shared values such as humility, discipline, empathy and responsibility, noting that both partners entered the marriage with clearly defined personal and professional commitments.

Adeoye also pointed out that the marriage comes at a time when Nigerians are increasingly demanding integrity, compassion and accountability from those in leadership positions, stressing that the couple exemplifies these ideals.

“At a time when Nigerians increasingly demand integrity and humanity from those in leadership, this union sends a subtle but powerful signal that service is strongest when anchored in personal stability, shared values, and a long view of legacy,” the statement noted.

It added that together, Zaynab and Akume embody a leadership model that balances authority with empathy and structure with service, underscoring the belief that leaders who understand humanity are better equipped to govern effectively.

Zaynab, who was previously known as Olori Wuraola, was formerly married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. That traditional marriage, which took place in March 2016, ended in 2017 after about 17 months.
