Benue LP declares Rep Agbese State Leader, pledges allegiance to Nenadi Usman's leadership

The Labour Party (LP) in Benue State has officially recognized Rep. Philip Agbese, member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, as the undisputed leader of the party in the state.

This was announced in a statement signed by Comr. Aluh Odeh, Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Benue LP.

The statement welcomed Agbese’s recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that as the highest elected office holder from Benue under the LP, he naturally assumes the leadership of the party in the state.

“By party convention and rules worldwide, Rep. Agbese, being the highest political officeholder, is the leader of the party in the state,” the statement read.

The Benue LP distanced itself from any factions, real or alleged, seeking to destabilize the party. It also acknowledged that the party had faced challenges following the 2023 general elections, including loss of members due to lack of support from the previous national leadership.

Odeh revealed that discussions with Agbese highlighted his charisma and capacity to revive the party ahead of the 2027 elections. His entry, he said, has already attracted new members and credible aspirants.

“Anyone claiming leadership of the LP in Benue State other than Hon. Philip Agbese is acting in defiance of the Supreme Court judgment affirming Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as National Chairman,” the statement added.

Odeh expressed confidence that with Agbese at the helm, the Labour Party is well-positioned to challenge the ruling APC.

“Hon. Philip Agbese’s entry has given our party the impetus and confidence to make a major impact in 2027. Those spreading falsehoods about our leadership are only seeking to inflate their ego against Supreme Court rulings.”

The Benue LP reiterated its loyalty to the national leadership of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, describing her leadership as the collective will of party members.

“Agbese brings experience, intellect, and grassroots appeal that promise to transform the party’s fortunes. His seamless integration has boosted morale, opened doors for alliances, and made him a rallying point for progressive forces in the state.

"Senator Usman continues to inspire confidence across the Labour Party, earning profound respect and allegiance from our chapter as the authentic anchor for victory and sustained growth,” the statement concluded.
