Benue Health Commissioner commences statewide tour to strengthen healthcare delivery

The Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, has commenced a comprehensive familiarization tour of agencies under his ministry, a move aimed at strengthening coordination and accelerating ongoing reforms in the state’s health sector.

During his visit to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, Dr. Ogwuche was warmly received by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hwande, alongside his management team, who briefed him on the institution’s milestones, current projects, and critical operational challenges.

The Commissioner was thereafter led on an extensive inspection of key facilities, including the ongoing Cancer Centre project, the Pharmacosurgical Complex, the Water Treatment Plant, and the VIP Clinics. Several other units of the tertiary health institution were also showcased.

Visibly impressed with the progress recorded at BSUTH, Dr. Ogwuche commended the management for what he described as the “remarkable transformation achieved in the last two years,” noting that the improvements aligned with Governor Hyacinth Alia’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing the health sector.

“These developments clearly show what focused leadership and proper coordination can deliver,” he remarked.

The Commissioner has also extended his tour to other critical health institutions, including the Benue State Health Insurance Agency, the School of Nursing, Makurdi, and the Benue State AIDS Control Agency (BENSACA).

At each locations, he emphasized that the familiarization exercise was designed to gather firsthand insights into agency operations, identify gaps requiring government intervention, enhance synergy, and ensure alignment with the state’s broader health policy direction.

According to Dr. Ogwuche, the ongoing tour was part of a strategic drive to consolidate gains already recorded while positioning the state’s health system to fully reflect Governor Alia’s transformation agenda, which prioritizes efficiency, accountability, and accessible quality healthcare for all residents of Benue State.

He was accompanied on the visits by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Beatrice Tswambu; Directors of Medical Services, Public Health, and Nursing Services; the Head of the Public Relations Unit; and other senior ministry officials.
