Anambra gun battle: Anambra police neutralise armed gang at Enugwu Agidi Junction

The Anambra State Police Command has neutralised a five-man armed gang following a fierce two-hour gun duel at Enugwu Agidi Junction in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, January 14, 2026, led to the death of two suspects, while three others sustained critical injuries.
The confrontation occurred when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, laid an ambush for the gang at the busy junction.
Police sources said the suspects were believed to be involved in armed robbery, cult-related activities and links to armed group operating within the state.
According to the police, the situation escalated when the suspects opened fire on the operatives upon sighting them, triggering a prolonged exchange of gunfire that lasted for about two hours.
Despite the intensity of the shootout, the officers were able to overpower the gang and bring the operation under control.

Following the successful operation, a cache of weapons and other incriminating items was recovered from the suspects.
These included one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms, a cult-related red beret, and a black Toyota Highlander vehicle allegedly used by the gang for their operations.
The police said the injured suspects are currently receiving medical attention under tight security, while investigations have commenced to unravel the full network of the gang and possible collaborators.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to sustaining proactive policing and intelligence-led operations aimed at ridding the state of criminal elements.
Residents were also urged to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to enhance public safety across the state.
